training a youngster..

Times flies when you are having fun! It is such a short time since our youngster born 2011 were just foals… but now they are getting their first real teaching by humans. This group is very big in our scale - eight mares and three stallion. Our goal with the first training session is to make them relaxed and calm, nice to work with in hand and then they take their first steps with a rider. From this we elevated if they are ready both physically and mentally  for more training in the winter or if they will have a brake until next summer.

The first year we just take it slow and let the youngsters develop their selfs, we do not want to push them. Some are just trained for 1-2 months and then have a brake, other are more mature and ready - and some just offer and offer  - then the trix is to slow them down so they don´t go ahead of themselves.

We usually start ourselves to make them use to too the hafter, work a bit in the paddock and put the shoes on - this takes 2-3 weeks. After that we send them to our very good friend and excellent rider Bylgja Gauksdóttir which takes care of the rest. :) In our opinion Bylgja is one of the best trainer that we have gotten to know and she takes exctreamly good care of the horses. She knows how much they can take and does´t ask for too much or goes over the line. She thinks it to the end with the wellbeing of the horse as the goal.

The training session of these eleven youngsters is soon coming to an end and more news about that later. We have some very interesting youngsters born 2011 after eg. Álfur from Selfoss, Byr from Mykjunes, Sær from Bakkakot, Hrafnar from Ragnheiðarstaðir, Álfinnur from Syðri-Gegnishólar, Sveinn-Hervar form Þúfa, Möller from Blesastaðir and more. Most of the mothers are 1.price. Exciting years ahead training these youngsters :)

Thanks from reading! :)

Askja and Bylgja in winter 2012 then Askja was 4 years old. She had a lot to give and got 1.price in LM2012. But she was trained right and keep on getting better - ended with 8.72 for riding abilities eg. 9.5 for pace and spirit, 9 for tölt and slow tölt. Askja is breed and owned by us.
